90s RPGs were hardcore man

I played Daggerfall for the whole train ride back from the city, and died more times in the dinky starter dungeon than I really care to admit. Let’s just say that I know the death visual sequence by heart now:

Daggerfall-i died-1
Daggerfall-i died-2
Daggerfall-i died-3
Daggerfall-i died-4

And back to…

Daggerfall-i died-5

One of these days I’ll get to the surface.

Embarrassing, really; these were the games I grew up playing. Earlier ones, even—I cut my teeth on Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on an original B&W 9″ Mac, and Ultima III: Exodus and The Bard’s Tale on an Apple II and IIGS. Plus the original Might & Magic I and II (before they were “Heroes of…”), and in high school I remember loving Pool of Radiance, though I don’t know that I remember a single thing about it.

I think I’ve gotten soft in my middle-age 😉
